Why Park City Is Perfect for Families
Listen, I drove west from Upstate New York on a college gap year almost twenty years ago, took a job at The Canyons doing kids' ski school, and never went back. Two world-class ski resorts, a brick-paved Main Street that looks like a postcard, and a summer that frankly outshines the winter once you know where to look. Hazel arrived a few years into our marriage to Jeff. Owen came three years after her. They are mountain kids now and there is no going back.

Winter Adventures
Park City Mountain Resort and Deer Valley both work for families at every level. Tiny ones start at the magic carpet. Older kids tackle the terrain parks. Pack kids ski goggles - the sun bouncing off Utah powder is no joke and a sea-level kid will squint for three days otherwise.

Beyond skiing, snow tubing at Woodward Park City (formerly Gorgoza) is the move, and a horse-drawn sleigh ride at the Homestead in Midway is the kind of memory the kids still bring up months later. Evening sleigh rides when the stars come out absolutely undo a 4-year-old.
Summer Fun
When the snow melts, Park City turns into a mountain biking and hiking town. Lift-served biking at PCMR is a blast for older kids. For the whole family, the Rail Trail is a flat, paved ribbon out toward Heber - perfect for bikes, strollers, scooters. A solid hydration backpack is non-negotiable up here. Y'all, I cannot stress enough what altitude does to a sea-level kid by mile two.
One real local warning - MOOSE on the trails. CAPS LOCK serious. Round Valley and Mid Mountain especially. Give them 50 yards minimum. Do not be a dummy.
Where to Eat
Main Street is full of restaurants that actually want your kids there. We rotate Hearth and Hill (kid menu, real food for grown-ups), Tupelo (the Sunday brunch over the regular dinner, every time), and the Park City Bread + Butter loaf for breakfast at home. Ashley my yoga friend in Heber has a standing rule: if it is Tuesday, we eat at the Heber food trucks after class. Pack a stainless water bottle for the dry mountain air between meals.
Heads up - a lot of Park City restaurants close on Mondays. Plan your dining around that or you will be eating gas station snacks.
Getting Here
SLC International is 35 minutes door to door under clear conditions. Up I-80 through Parley's Canyon. Easy on a clear day, can double in a snowstorm. Always pack a compact first aid kit - with kids you never know. Kids headphones for the drive and the flight will save your sanity.
What to Pack for Ski Season
Our tested picks:
- kids ski goggles
- reusable hand warmers
- kids thermal base layers
- insulated kids water bottle
- compact first aid kit
- kids travel headphones
And lotion. The dryness will destroy your face and lips inside 48 hours. I cannot stress this enough.
